Q. Why so many hosen?
A. I'm a girl who gets bored easily
and sewing and costume design has long been a way for me to channel
some of that idleness. I also realized that Lucil had many different
moods and modes and once I designed, drafted, and constructed the first
pair, I couldn't turn back. I would come across a bit of embroidered
trim (classic hosen) or beautiful icy corduroy fabric (frozen hosen),
or a vintage silvery red apron with a fine flowered border (garden hosen),
and I'd know that it would be a future hosen.
There are also practical reasons for getting into custom hosen making.
Because traditional lederhosen are made of leather, they are heavy,
unwashable, and retain odor. Playing night after night in smoky clubs
made for one nasty pair of suede hosen (the traditional). I thus invented
the classic cotton hosen and frozen hosen—they are washable, lightweight,
and pack into a small area. They are also easy to repair when the wear
and tear of rocking occurs. There are other outfits that are pure eye-candy
and are in no way practical. The massive pants of the raver hosen take
up at least half of a suitcase (and for this reason rarely worn) and
the intergalactic hosen heat up under lights and bake the wearer like
a foiled potato.
Q: Tell us about the return of Soiro Bizzaro.
